Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Jacksonville

Asphalt shingles cover more than 80% of residential roofs in the United States — and in Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, that number is higher. They dominate for a reason: no other roofing material at their price point delivers the same combination of wind resistance, warranty coverage, color options, and proven performance in Florida's climate.

NEXGEN Roofing is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor — top 1% nationwide — and GAF Certified Plus. We install both product lines and carry the certifications required to offer the highest-tier warranties from each manufacturer. The difference between a certified installation and a standard one isn't just the shingles — it's whether the warranty is real when you need it.

This page covers everything a Jacksonville homeowner needs to know: product types, manufacturer comparison, Florida Building Code specifics, warranty tiers, cost ranges, and how to choose the right system. Comparing OC and GAF specifically? See our Owens Corning vs GAF deep dive →

The Three Types of Asphalt Shingles — What the Difference Actually Means

Three-Tab Shingles

Three-tab shingles are the baseline product — flat profile, uniform look, wind rating typically up to 60–70 mph. In Northeast Florida's designated wind zone, three-tab shingles do not meet the performance threshold NEXGEN installs to. We do not install three-tab on full roof replacements. If you receive a competing bid specifying three-tab shingles, understand that you are getting the minimum viable product for a region where Category 2 and 3 hurricane winds are a documented risk — and you are not eligible for any enhanced manufacturer warranty coverage.

Architectural (Laminate) Shingles

Architectural shingles — also called laminate or dimensional shingles — are the industry standard for residential roofing in Jacksonville. Two-layer construction creates a dimensional profile that mimics wood shake, and they carry the Florida Building Code wind ratings required for this region. Owens Corning Duration Series and GAF Timberline HDZ are both architectural shingles rated to 130 mph. They are what NEXGEN installs on the vast majority of residential replacements in Northeast Florida.

The meaningful performance difference between product lines comes from the proprietary technology each manufacturer layers on top of the base construction. Duration uses SureNail® Technology — a woven fabric strip in the nailing zone that creates a stronger fastener grip and wider nailing surface. Timberline HDZ uses LayerLock® Technology — a StrikeZone nailing area with an enhanced adhesive seal. Both technologies are specifically designed to improve wind performance and installation consistency. Both matter in Florida.

Impact-Resistant and Premium Shingles

Class 3 and Class 4 impact-resistant shingles add hail and debris resistance beyond what standard architectural shingles provide. In Jacksonville, where hail events are less frequent than the Gulf Coast, the primary driver for impact-resistant shingles is typically the insurance premium discount they can unlock rather than the hail risk itself. Some Florida insurers offer credits for Class 4 impact-resistant roofing — ask your insurer specifically and get it in writing before making a material decision based on that potential discount.

Owens Corning Duration STORM® and Duration FLEX® are the impact-resistant options in the OC lineup. GAF Timberline UHDZ™ uses UltraMat™ fiberglass mat technology to achieve a Class 4 rating. Both carry enhanced warranties through their respective Platinum/Master Elite contractor programs.

How Florida's Climate Affects Shingle Performance

Jacksonville sits in Florida Building Code Wind Zone II — design wind speeds of 130 mph for most of Duval County, with coastal areas subject to additional exposure category requirements. That classification drives material selection in ways that don't apply in most of the country.

UV degradation is the primary aging mechanism for shingles in Northeast Florida — not freeze-thaw cycles as in northern climates. Granule loss accelerates under sustained high-UV exposure, which is why the effective lifespan of a shingle roof in Jacksonville (20–25 years for standard architectural, 25–30 years for premium) is shorter than the manufacturer's rated lifespan assumes based on northern installation data.

Salt air matters specifically for coastal properties. Homes within two miles of the ocean — Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach, and coastal Ponte Vedra Beach — experience salt air exposure that degrades standard galvanized fasteners and flashings significantly faster than inland properties. NEXGEN uses corrosion-resistant fasteners and stainless or aluminum flashings as standard on all coastal installations because the warranty requires it and because it's the right way to build a roof in a salt air environment.

Florida Building Code requires a minimum of four nails per shingle in this wind zone — not the two-nail pattern used in lower wind zones. On steep slopes exceeding 21:12 pitch, six nails per shingle are required. Installation to the FBC spec is what determines whether the manufacturer's warranty is valid and whether the city inspection passes. Cutting to three nails to save installation time is a common shortcut that voids the warranty and fails the inspection. Every NEXGEN installation is to FBC spec because it's required, not optional.

Florida Insurance Note: Florida insurers can scrutinize roofs at 10 years old and non-renew coverage at 15 years. A properly installed, fully permitted new roof resets that clock. NEXGEN provides wind mitigation documentation after every installation — required for insurer premium credits under Florida law. See our Warranty page and Roof Cost Guide for more detail.

Insurance thresholds based on current Florida market conditions and may vary by insurer and property location.

Why the Manufacturer Warranty Is Only as Good as the Contractor

This is the part of the shingle conversation that most contractors skip — because it doesn't benefit them to explain it honestly.

Every asphalt shingle comes with a standard manufacturer warranty. That warranty covers manufacturing defects in the materials. What it does not cover — in the standard tier — is workmanship. If the roof is installed incorrectly and fails, the manufacturer's standard warranty pays for replacement shingles. The labor to re-install them is on you.

The enhanced warranty tiers — Owens Corning's System Protection, Preferred Protection, and Platinum Protection, and GAF's System Plus, Silver Pledge, Gold Pledge, and Golden Pledge — add workmanship coverage on top of material coverage. They also extend the TRU PROtection or equivalent 100% no-depreciation coverage period from 10 years to 50 years.

But those enhanced tiers are not available to every contractor. They require:

— Installation of a qualifying full system (minimum 4 OC components or equivalent GAF system)

— Contractor certification at the Platinum Preferred, Preferred, or Certified level

A non-certified contractor installing OC shingles can offer you the Standard Limited Lifetime warranty. That warranty provides zero workmanship coverage. None. The shingles are covered. The installation is not.

NEXGEN's Owens Corning Platinum Preferred status and GAF Certified Plus certification mean we can offer the highest-tier warranties from both manufacturers. On qualifying OC installations, that means Platinum Protection — Limited Lifetime workmanship, 50-year TRU PROtection, no depreciation for 50 years. See our [Warranty page](/warranty) for the full breakdown of what each tier covers.

The question to ask every roofing contractor you're getting bids from: what warranty tier can you offer, and what are the specific requirements for that tier? If they don't know the answer, that's your answer.

Frequently Asked Questions — Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Jacksonville, FL

  • Standard architectural shingles typically last 20–25 years in Jacksonville's climate. Premium architectural shingles with enhanced granule adhesion — OC Duration, GAF Timberline HDZ — typically last 25–30 years. The primary aging mechanism in Florida is UV degradation rather than freeze-thaw cycles, so actual lifespan depends heavily on attic ventilation quality, installation spec compliance, and proximity to the coast. Coastal properties within two miles of the ocean typically see lifespans at the lower end of those ranges due to salt air exposure. Florida insurers can scrutinize roofs at 10 years old and non-renew coverage at 15 years — that threshold matters more than the product's rated lifespan for most Jacksonville homeowners.

  • SureNail® Technology is a patented woven fabric strip embedded in the nailing zone of every Duration Series shingle. It creates a wider, stronger nailing surface that makes fasteners significantly harder to pull through the shingle under wind load. The result is a documented improvement in wind uplift resistance — Duration shingles with SureNail achieve a 130 mph wind rating, versus 110 mph on Oakridge shingles that don't use the technology. For Jacksonville's Wind Zone II, 130 mph is the relevant threshold.

  • LayerLock® Technology is GAF's proprietary system for bonding the two laminate layers of Timberline HDZ shingles together during installation. It creates a StrikeZone nailing area with an enhanced adhesive strip that activates after installation. Combined with the HDZ's nail placement zone, it contributes to the 130 mph wind rating and eligibility for GAF's WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty — which has no wind speed limit when installed with four required GAF accessories.

  • Architectural shingle roof replacements in Jacksonville typically run $8,500–$25,000 depending on home size, pitch, decking condition, and product tier. NEXGEN's average job is $13,500 based on a 3,000 sq ft home at $450 per square using architectural shingles. See our Jacksonville Roof Cost Guide for detailed pricing by home size and material.

  • Yes — in two ways. First, a new roof resets Florida's 10/15-year insurance clock regardless of material, and a new installation comes with wind mitigation documentation that can unlock premium credits. Second, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles may qualify for additional discounts from some Florida insurers — ask your insurer specifically before selecting a product based on that potential benefit. A wind mitigation inspection after your new roof is installed documents your eligibility for those credits. NEXGEN provides wind mitigation documentation automatically after every installation.

  • Duration uses SureNail® Technology — Oakridge does not. That difference results in a 130 mph wind rating for Duration vs 110 mph for Oakridge, and access to higher-tier OC warranties on Duration that aren't available on Oakridge. For Jacksonville's wind zone, Duration is the appropriate product. Oakridge is a value product appropriate for lower wind zones or situations where budget is the overriding constraint and the wind exposure is lower. NEXGEN primarily installs Duration Series.

“Working with NexGen and Brent Erickson has been an exceptional experience. We’ve had two repairs completed by them: the first when a tree fell through our roof, and the second to fix a leak. Both times, the repairs were done promptly and the entire process was incredibly smooth. The match in color on the shingles was amazing! I highly recommend their services!”
